About New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve centres on the riverfront, where fireworks go off over the Mississippi at midnight; the crowds gather at Woldenberg Park, the Moonwalk and the foot of Jackson Square.

New Year's Day used to mean the Sugar Bowl in the Superdome. Under the 12-team College Football Playoff the game's date now moves: in the 2026–27 season it is a semifinal on 15 January 2027, and it returns to 31 December in 2027.
