Essence Festival of Culture

A Fourth of July weekend of concerts in the Superdome and daytime talks and markets at the convention center, held in New Orleans since 1995 with few exceptions.

In August 2026 local press reported that the festival's contract with the city was up and that its request for public incentives was under negotiation. Treat any post-2026 New Orleans dates as unconfirmed until Essence announces them.

About Essence Fest

Essence Fest started in 1995 as a music festival marking Essence magazine's 25th anniversary and grew into a 'festival of culture': nightly concerts in the Superdome and a free or low-cost daytime programme of talks, markets and wellness events at the convention center. It moved to Houston once, in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina, and went virtual in 2020 and 2021.

It is one of the biggest weekends of the year for hotel occupancy downtown, and it overlaps the Fourth of July fireworks on the river.
