History

Proteus, named for the shape-changing sea god, was founded in 1882 and is the second-oldest of the old-line parading krewes. Its floats are built on wagon chassis dating from the 1880s, and its parade is lit by flambeaux carriers as Carnival parades were before electricity.

Proteus stopped parading after the City Council's 1991–92 ordinance requiring krewes to certify that they did not discriminate, and returned to the streets in 2000.
